364MC – Professional Practice Portfolio – RESEARCH

Today during our first lecture we were informed on what we need to do starting from as soon as NOW, we were shows yesterday a few examples and today of some show reels.  We were told to do a lot of research as the more research you do you get to witness the mistakes of previous students and learn to not make them yourself, so I went home and began to look for some show reels on YouTube and Vimeo and found some really great at others which looked like a student show reel which I did not like at all.

Foreign Film review – The Host !

The Host

Produced by: Choi Yong-Bae The Director: Joon – ho Bong The writers: Joon-ho Bong (screenplay), Won-jun Ha (screenplay), and the main stars are: Kang-ho Song, Hie-bong Byeon and Hae-il Park. Released: 10 November 2006 (UK)

The reason why I have decided to choose The Host which is a South Korean film is because it is not portrayed as your typical comedy, horror and drama film. To summarize this film it consists of a monster is created in the Han River by a science lab pouring numerous amount of radioactive bottles into a drain of the sink which lead to Seoul’s Han River. The monster which was created grew and began to attack many individuals however, it grabbed a young girl and took her to its hide out and throughout the film it showed us that her family were trying to get her back and went through many lengths and measurements.

Storyline –

The opening of the Host shows an American doctor (Scott Wilson) ordering his Korean assistant (Brian Lee) to dump hundreds of bottles of ‘Formaldehyde’ down the sink which lead to the Han River. Few years later, two men are standing in the Han River fishing when they discover a mutant amphibian (however it is never shown) but allows our imagination take control. Four years down the line, a man does shown standing at the edge of the bridge in the pouring rain want to commit suicide in the Han River. Before he jumps a car arrives at his location where two men run out of the car shouting to the suicidal man but he ignores and before jumping off the bridge he looks down into the river and notices something dark but it does not bother him and he eventually jumps off and then the scene ends and fades into the present.

The monster which was created grew and began to attack many individuals however, it grabbed a young girl and took her to its hide out and throughout the film it showed us that her family were trying to get her back and went through many lengths and measurements.

Host circulates around Park Hee-bong who is a father and grandfather throughout the film. He is the owner of a small snack bar on the banks of Han River and lives with his two sons, only daughter, and granddaughter. The parks seem to lead an ordinary and peaceful life, however they are portrayed as being poor and are not brighter than an average Seoulite. Hee-bongs elder son Gang-du is an immature and incompetent man who is in his 40’s whose wife had left him long ago. Nam-il is the youngest son who is unemployed grumbler and his only daughter Nam-joo is an archery medallist and member of the national team.

During a beautiful sunny day in the Park on the Han River a monster appeared and the people who were in the park that day all feel curious and ran towards the monster where they stood on the edge of the Han River pavement and began to throw food and anything they could find into the river to have the monster re-appear. A minute later the monster appears and everyone begins to run for their lives in fear of the unknown monster which freakishly resembles a fish but over sized, ugly and mutant-like. Then once Gang-du’s daughter Hyun-seo is caught by the monster after her father had lost her during the attack when everyone was running and they tripped up and Gang-du held another girls hand not realising he had left behind his only daughter. Once he realises what had happened he turns around and realises that his daughter was far away from him and sees the monster running towards Hyun-seo and grabs her with its tail and jumps into the Han River and swims far away from everyone after causing chaos, injuries and death to people. All of the family members fall into great misery as they had lost the youngest family member who was very dear to them, however, once her father Gang-du receives a phone call from his daughter re-assuring him that she is still alive the family form a group and align and to go out on a mission to save their beloved family member Hyun-seo. So therefore after that point the film continues with the family running around trying to find Hyun-seo.

Filming

Some of the filming had taken place in the real sewers near the Han River rather than just filming everything on a set that would totally diminish the point of realism which the film presently holds. The starts and crew were inoculated against a tetanus by the medical offer. During filming the crew had to deal with the effects of the change in the weather and ambient temperature. This was including the sewage water freezing in cold temperatures, so it therefore needed to be broken up and melted. During the hot and windy periods the water reached evaporation and the silt turned to dust, which lead to blow around in the breeze and into the faces of the crew.

Special effects

When it came down to the special effects the director had to work around the budget-imposed restrictions. The creature was designed by Chin Wei-chen, and the modelling was done BY New Zealand –based Weta Workshop and the animatronics were by John Cox’s creature Workshop. The CGI for this film was created by ‘The Orphanage’, which also did some of the visual effects in ‘The day after tomorrow’.

The creation of the monster was designed with some specific parameters in mind. According to the director his inspiration came from a local article which was about a deformed fish with an S-shaped spine caught in the Han River. Therefore the director went on to wishing for his mutant to look like a fish rather than have a fantastical design. The mutated fish-like monster is exhibited to have frontal limbs which are much similar to amphibian’s legs. This element of its design was more of a choice by the designers as the monster needed to be able to run around attack and commit other acrobatic movements during the film.

Festival Research

During the summer I went to two festivals, one was in London and the other in Leicester.  When attending both I was able to see the difference between both festivals and the people who attended.  When comparing both, London’s festival was your typical festival it had the lights, the energy, the float boats where as Leicester festival during the day had more of a family feel to it as it had activities which young children were able to participate in and face painting which was great.  To attract an audience you need a great set of advertisements, something which will appeal to people and lure them in.  As you can see in the images below and of course you have been to a festival and some point in your life, festivals are all about fun and fantasy.  You have so much for different age groups, amazing dancers, so much colour it’s as if you are in Rio.

Thames Festival + Carnival Saturday &Sunday 10th & 11th September

The Thames Festival was so glamorous bold and bright you could see it miles away.  However, that was nothing compared to the energy that everyone had.  Location is ‘key’ to a successful festival.  For London the location was based in the centre so that when walking throughout the festival not only do you get to enjoy the entertainers at the festival but also the scenery of the one and only London.  The Thames Festival was a chance to see entertainers and dancers and the walk throughout.

Below are a few more images of the Thames festival.

Now onto the Leicester Riverside Festival on Saturday & Sunday the 4th & 5th June

The Leicester Riverside Festival was great as you will see with the images below it was all about a fun family day out.  There were activities, competitions, entertainers, and a child’s dream of an outing.   To attract individuals and families to this festival it all comes down to ‘good advertisement’, which basically what you need is to look at the target audience and from there you are able to know what it is they would be interested in and who would visit.  Weekend festivals will attract more individuals no doubt, including activities especially ones for families is even better.  This festival included boat competitions, my personal favourite was the boat filled with animals, of course not real animals however speaking of animals there was an amazing species of birds and it was none other then the one and only ‘Owl’ so friendly and beautiful, entertainers who even had face paint and one looked like a clown and a jewellery stand who were selling beautiful jewellery with signs on the front of their stall making us aware of children in need which I thought was fantastic.

Camberwell Studios

Over the summer I had been applying to so many companies until finally an amazing studio called Camberwell Studio replied and informing me that they had a project which they needed more people to help.  I was extremely pleased with this email and was so excited that I could not wait to go meet the team and begin working on their project.  The project was called Street Fit Hip Hop, imagine what Zumba is like and just turn it into Hip Hop.  Below is evidence of the email exchanged between the studio and myself.

DAY 1

Arriving at Camberwell Studios at 7:40AM I should be saying ‘Oh I was so tired’ but honestly I was so excited and eager to start.  First thing first, the Production Manager who goes by the name of Tai was really nice and friendly and introduced me to the crew and they too were friendly, then he showed me around the studio and allowed me to familiarize myself with the location.  Now it was time to get the set sorted before all of the dancers and choreographer arrive.  The set designer ‘Lorraine’ began to sort out the set where I helped her with many of the materials which were needed for each shot of the video.  I also interacted a lot with the Lighting man the lovely ‘Sam Parkinson’ who was such a joy to be around, he was funny, friendly, and was teaching me many different effects of lighting. Edward Szekely is one of the founders of Creative Space-winning production company BytesCorp and also works as a Greenscreen Technician at Camberwell Studios, even though he was the youngest from the crew members he was so professional, and helped ease my nerves as he is a recent graduate from Birmingham University.  The director of the shoot was called Piers vernon-Kell who is known as a Photographer and Video Director, was amazing I would stand over him watching his every move, listening to what he would say, he too helped me as they all did.
Here are a few images from Day 1

DAY 2

During day 2 it was much less hectic than the first day as that day only had the five dancers and crew members.  Day 2 was specifically created to teach and show the audience what they could be doing and how to do it, your own personal work out DVD but in a dance routine, and as you will see they have some difficult moves to do.  There were two different scenes the first of the day was the dancers and choreographer showing and teaching you (the audience) the workout steps and the second was when each dancer had to stand in front of the camera and read their lines from an auto-cue.

EDITING

I was lucky enough to have been sitting with Piers the director and watching him edit and giving him my personal thought about what he was doing and if he was to use another technique what would be the difference.  The editing was turning out to be amazing and very clean cut because it all depended on the lighting, recording and sound.  If you can’t be bothered to take the time to perfect the lighting for each shot and what you want it to look like in the end then do not expect any editing software to make up for the lack of effort you have put in.  We would spend a good time turning and twisting the lights and keep on checking how everything would look on camera and once we were happy with it that is when the recording would take place.

Lunch time(s)

I sat with Tai and Piers and would talk to them about what they do, what they did to get to the stage they are at.  They asked what I do in my spare time, hobbies and what I was studying, why and what I wanted to do with it.  They had informed me that it does not matter what qualifications you have it’s all about the experience.  However it was not just them, Sam Parkinson,Edward Szekely and Andy Woodruff.
Overall Experience

I enjoyed every minute of my time at Camberwell Studios, it was professional, it was laid back, the people were so friendly and helpful and took the time to help me in learning so much about each of their job skills and requirements.  I felt the difference working with a real studio company it does not matter what their job role is they all took each others feedback and opinions which resulted in a great outcome whereas at University the students who have the higher job roles let it get to their heads and they don’t take their teams advice, which has resulted in a terrible project from my personal experience of my time at University.  It is vital to have an up-to-date auto-cue as it makes the life of presenters much easier as it would be easier to read.  I was told I did a great job and they look forward to working with me again in another major production, which I was very pleased to hear.

My role for the day was a -

London Tate Modern Museum !

Today I went to the Tate Modern Museum and even though it was a horrible gloomy and rainy day it had to be done.  I decided to go see an American Artist who goes by the name of Taryn Simon, A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters.   What Simon shows in her work was extremely interesting and at the same time it was great as each country she visited had the same story, which to me I saw it as we may come from different back grounds but at the end of the day our belief is the same, and that sort of united everyone. Simon s work was all about reincarnation!  Since camera were not allowed I have collected from our dear friend ‘Google’  some images of what I had seen on the day.

When I first walked into the room of Simon s work I was instantly slammed with small images, small text and a blank beige/cream background.  I had no idea where to start the left side or the right.  Once you get passed the feeling of blank colours and try to concentrate on the images and the story of it all, it’s quite interesting.  How Simon has collated her work is genius and here is why, when you walk into the room of her work even though there are many images which confuses you, you happen to always start on the left hand side and work your way around the room and this continues.  In each frame there is a different country with the same story, you leave the museum still thinking about her work and without realizing you inform others on what you saw that day.  I know I did, while I was in the car on my way home I was informing my mum on what I had seen and learned.  Being in a museum and seeing so many different things, when an individual leaves and is able to remember your work and excited about it, well that’s how you know your work is one of the ‘greats’.  Simon s work had such a great impact on me, I don’t personally believe in reincarnation but she still left me leaving Tate modern ‘thinking’ which was fantastic.

At the very bottom I will include a conclusion of what I have learnt from the stories which stood out to me so that it is not just a copy and paste.  This is really important to me as I personally and passionately enjoyed Simon s work and the below stories stood out from the crowd to me.

The following story is about Arthur Ruppin who was sent by the Zionist Organization to Palestine.

Arthur Ruppin was sent by the Zionist Organization to Palestine in 1907 to investigate agricultural and industrial development possibilities for Jewish settlement. In 1908 he moved with his wife, Selma Lewek, to Jaffa, where he established the Zionist Organization’s Palestine Office, tasked with acquiring land for Jewish settlements. As the office’s director, Ruppin worked toward the systematic settlement of land through the spread of self-governing Jewish communities. He oversaw land acquisition on behalf of the Palestine Land Development Company, whose work led to the establishment of a Jewish state. Ruppin financed urban and rural experimental settlements with funds from supporters of the Zionist movement. He was instrumental in securing funding for land on the Carmel mountain range, and in Afula, the Jezreel Valley, Jerusalem, and Ahuzat Bayit, which became Tel Aviv.

Originally a founder and strong supporter of Brit Shalom, a movement that supported a bi-national state in Palestine, Ruppin later rejected the idea after the violent 1929 riots in which Jews and the local Arab population clashed over issues including access to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Ruppin subsequently committed himself to the establishment of an independent Jewish state through continued land acquisition and settlement. As head of the Jewish Agency for Israel, he assisted in the absorption of Yemenite Jews and the settling of German Jewish immigrants during the Nazi rise to power. After his appointment in 1926 to the sociology department at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Ruppin published The Jews in the Modern World (1934) and The Jewish Fate and Future (1940).

One which stood out to me was the images and story from Kenya.  As when I was standing and reading the information on the side I was shocked.
Joseph Nyamwanda Jura Ondijo (1) treats patients suffering from a wide range of conditions, including evil spirits, infertility, and mental illness, as well as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. He is most commonly paid for his services in cash, cows, or goats, but sometimes his female patients are offered to him in marriage, by their families, in exchange for treatment. Ondijo has nine wives, thirty-two children, and sixty-three grandchildren. Two of his wives came to Ondijo suffering from infertility; both were cured and had his children. Three wives were brought to Ondijo suffering from evil spirits. Another had an asthmatic condition and severe chest pains. Ondijo claims he selected two wives for love, paying their families a total of sixteen cows. One of his wives deserted him, and another passed away during treatment for evil spirits.

Polygamy is widely practiced in Kenya. It is more common among a privileged class capable of keeping multiple homes and paying numerous dowries. Instances of prominent Kenyan political and social figures in polygamous relationships have reinforced the perception of polygamy as a symbol of wealth, status, and power. Recent legislative efforts supporting the practice include a bill proposing the legal recognition of civil polygamous marriage. Supporters have claimed that polygamy offers an alternative to infidelity in areas with a high concentration of HIV/AIDS. Many organizations dispute this with statistical evidence of higher rates of HIV/AIDS in men and women in polygamous unions.

Ondijo claims his decisions to take on additional wives were often made in collaboration with his first wife, Maria Awuor Nyamwanda, with the intention of easing the burden of domestic duties, such as child-bearing, helping with agricultural work, and looking after Ondijo and his practice.

Below is another story which interested me.  This story is about Iraq.

Latif Yahia (2) claims to have been the body double of Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein’s son. Yahia was a classmate of Uday, and the two were often mistaken for each other. After completing his studies in law and government, Yahia enlisted in the army as part of Iraq’s compulsory military service. His commander later released him with instructions to report to the presidential palace, where security forces were seeking a “fiday” (body double) for Uday. This search was reportedly initiated following information regarding possible assassination attempts by Iranians against the Hussein family. Yahia declined the offer to become Uday’s body double and consequently was placed in solitary confinement. He accepted the position only after rape threats were made against his sister.

Yahia had reconstructive surgery on his teeth and chin in a Baghdad hospital in 1987. He was given shoes with three-centimeter lifts to match Uday’s exact height. His training involved watching films of Uday to study his mannerisms and behavior, including videos of Iraqis being tortured and executed on Uday’s command. Before each event as Uday, Yahia received instructions on what to wear, what to say, and how to move. He was always accompanied by security forces responsible for ensuring that he maintained character. Yahia was released from his duties as Uday’s body double after four years, in the summer of 1991, following the conclusion of the Gulf War. According to Yahia, he was then arrested and tortured for several weeks under suspicion of meeting with one of Uday’s girlfriends. His recovery involved a forty-five-day hospital stay before he fled to a Kurdish- held area in northern Iraq. He claims he was flown to Turkey in 1992 by American operatives in exchange for information.

Another story which stood out to me was about Leila Khaled a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)

Leila Khaled (1), a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), hijacked her first plane on August 29, 1969. After several plastic surgeries to alter her appearance, Khaled was involved in a coordinated series of hijackings in 1970 known as the Dawson’s Field hijackings.

Khaled was born in Haifa, but she and her family were displaced in 1948 as a result of the Arab– Israeli War and relocated to a refugee camp in Tyre, Lebanon. She joined the Arab Nationalist Movement and committed to fulltime armed struggle at the age of fifteen. At the time of the hijackings, Khaled demanded the release of all Palestinian and Arab prisoners in Israel. Through her work with the PFLP, her demands include a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, the withdrawal of Israel from the land it has occupied since 1967, and the right to self-determination.

The first woman to hijack an aircraft, Khaled, along with her partner Salim Issawi, commandeered TWA flight 840 from Rome to Tel Aviv, armed with grenades and handguns. The plane was diverted to Damascus where the hostages were directed to disembark before the aircraft’s cockpit was blown up. This hijacking led to the release of Palestinian political prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages and made Khaled a celebrated figure of Palestinian militancy.

Changes made to her nose and chin allowed Khaled to avoid detection and board El Al flight 219 from Amsterdam to New York for her second hijacking attempt. She boarded the plane with Nicaraguan PFLP member Patrick Arguello, two passports from Honduras, and grenades in her pockets. Khaled and Arguello attempted to storm the cockpit, but the pilot reportedly put the plane into a steep nosedive to throw them off balance. Arguello was shot dead by plainclothes armed guards aboard the El Al plane, and Khaled was captured. The aircraft made an emergency landing at London’s Heathrow Airport. Khaled was arrested and held at Ealing police station for twenty-eight days before Prime Minister Edward Heath released her in a bitterly opposed exchange for hostages held by the PFLP.

Lastly my final example of what interested me on the day was what stuck in my head more than the others.

Ribal Btaddini (17) is believed to be the reincarnation of his paternal grandfather, Milhem Btaddini (17). He is therefore both father and son to his own father, Fouad Btaddini (18), and the grandfather of his brothers, Feras Btaddini (19) and Iad Btaddini (21). As a child, Ribal was able to recall aspects of his previous life, including the location of his home and how to get there; clothing and where it had been purchased; bombings that had taken place the night of his death; and how his wife tried to drag his injured body to safety. Ribal belongs to the Druze, a religious community found primarily in Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Syria. Reincarnation is central to their beliefs. Druze traditions derive from the Ismaili sect of Islam and are influenced by Gnostic principles and Greek philosophy. They do not accept converts, as their belief in intra-community reincarnation precludes the possibility of outside believers. The largely secular majority of Druze (juhhal) are denied access to holy literature and religious meetings by initiated members (uqqal) responsible for enforcing a strict code of moral and ethical behavior. The Druze played an integral role in the formation of the modern state of Lebanon. They have long concealed the more esoteric aspects of their beliefs for fear of persecution.

Four additional relatives of Ribal Btaddini claim to have memories from previous lives. Samar Barakat (116) remembers drowning while trying to save her daughter who had fallen from a window into the sea. Ragheed Chehayeb (5) remembers piloting a plane that was hit by a missile and crashed in Israel. Chérine Barakat (117) remembers being tall, wearing long skirts with her hair tied up, and having many homes, including one in London as well as a palace. Amal Btaddini (11) remembers the necklace she used to wear as Najla Daou and the names of several people in Daou family photographs whom she has never met. She was born on the same day that Daou passed away. It is assumed that if a child has no memories from a previous life, then that life contained no noteworthy events or something interfered with the child’s memory.

I acknowledge that all of the information and images above are from Taryn Simons website!

Conclusion of my understanding of each story I have collected.
Arthur Ruppin
In 1907 Arthur Ruppin was sent to Palestine by the Zionist Organization to investigate the agricultural and industrial development possibilities for the Jewish settlement.  He then moved to Jaffa with his wife Selma Lewek in 1908, where he recognized the Zionist Organization’s Palestine Office, where he was assigned to acquire some land for the Jewish settlements.  As the office’s director, Ruppin worked towards the systematic settlement of land Development Company, whose work led to the Jewish establishment of a Jewish state.  Ruppin was then able to finance the urban and rural experimental settlements by support from the Zionist movement.  Initially a founder and strong supporter of Brit Shalom, a movement which supported a bi-national state in Palestine, Ruppin shortly rejected the idea after the violent riots which occurred in 1929 which caused a clash between the local Arabs and the Jews over issues which included the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Kenya Joseph Nyamwanda Jura Ondijo
Joseph Nyamwanda Jura Ondijo used to treat patients who would suffer from a wide range of illness/conditions such as; evil spirits, infertility, mental illness, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.  When it was time to pay him it wasn’t always with cash he also would receive cows or goats however, his female patients were offered to him for marriage by their parents for their treatment.  As you may have discovered yes he married nine women, had thirty-two children and sixty-three grand children, talk about your big family.

Polygamy is widely practiced in Kenya however it is mostly common for those who are of a privileged class as they would be capable of owning more than one home and paying numerous dowries.  Instances of prominent Kenyan political and social figures in polygamous relationships have reinforced the perception that polygamy is a sign of wealth, status and of course power.  Recent legislative efforts supporting the practice include a bill proposing the legal recognition of civil polygamous marriage.  Supporters have claimed that polygamy offers an alternative to infidelity in the areas which consume a high concentration of HIV/AIDS.  Many organizations have had a difference of opinion with the statistical evidence of higher rates of HIV/AIDS in men and women who are in polygamous unions.

Ondijo claims the reason for why he had many wives was because after his first wife Maria Awuor Nyamwanda, they had the intention of helping to ease the ‘burden’ of domestic duties which included child-bearing, agricultural work and looking after Ondijo and his practice.

IRAQ Latif Yahia

Latif Yahia had claimed to be the body double of Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein’s son.  Yahia was the classmate of Uday and they were often mistaken for one another.  After he completed his studies in Law and Government, Yahia enlisted in the army as part of Iraq’s compulsary military service. He was later released with strict instructions to report to the presidential palace where security forces were looking for an individual to be the body double of Uday.  The reason to why this search was because there was possible assasination attempts by the Iranians against the Hussein family.  Yahia however rejected the offer and as a result of his decision was placed in solitary confinement.  Sadly, he accepted after the rape threats against his sister.

This is where the process began, he had reconstructive surgery on his teeth and chin in a Baghdad hospital in 1987.  He was given shoes with three-centimetre lifts to match Uday’s exact height.  His training involved watching films of Uday to study his mannerisms and behaviour, he also had to watch videos of Iraqis being tortured and executed on Uday’s command.  Before each event as Uday, Yahia received instructions on what to wear, what to say even how to move.  As any individual in that high rank he was always accompanied by security forces who were responsible for ensuring he maintained in character.  Yahia was then released from his duties as Uday’s body double after four years, in the summer of 1991, which followed the conclusion of the Gulf War. According to Yahia he was captured and tortured for several weeks as they were suspicious he was meeting with one of Uday’s girlfriends.  It took his fourty-five days in hospital to recover then once released he fled to a Kurdish-held area which is in northern Iraw.  He claims he was flown to Turkey in 1992 by the American operatives in exchange for information.

Leila Khaled
Leila Khaled who was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PELP), hijacked her first plane on August 29 1969.  Following several plastic surgeries in order to alter her appearance, she was later involved in a coordinated series of hijackings in 1970 which was then known as the Dawson’s Field hijackings.   Khaled was born in Haifa but she and her family were displaced in 1948 because of the Arab-Israeli War and then relocated to a refugee camp in Tyre, Lebanon.  She joined the Arab Nationalist Movement and committed to fulltime armed struggle at the age of fiffteen.  During the time of her hijackings, Khaled demanded the release of all Palestinian and Arab prisoners in Israel.  Through her work with the PELP, her demands included a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, the withdrawal of Israel from the land which it had occupied since 1967, and the right to self determination.

Khaled became a celebrated figure of the Palestinian military by hijacking a plane which was diverted to Damascus where the hostages were directed to go ashore before the aircraft’s cockpit was blown up.  Because of this hijacking it allowed the release of Palestinian political prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages.

In order for Khaled to not be detected when making plans to hijack another plane she altered her nose and chin so she can board El Al flight 219 from Amsterdam to New York.  She did not go alone she brought with her Nicaraguan PELP member Patrick Arguello, with two passports to Honduras and grenades in her pocket.  When attempting to storm the cockpit the pilot put the plane into a steep which cause Khaled and Arguello to lose their balance.  Arguello was shot dead by plainclothes armed guards aboard El Al plane, Khaled was captured and arrested when making an emergency landing at London’s Heathrow Airport.  She was held for twenty-eight days at Ealing station where she was then released by Prime Minister Edward Heath in a bitterly opposed exchange for hostages which were held by the PELP.

Ribal Btaddini

I had a tough time searching for a work placement in England so I decided to look abroad at the last minute and found ‘Future Services’ in Kuwait, and they were more than happy to allow me to earn my work experience at their company for 15 days.

During Easter break I travelled to Kuwait to work on a Health and Safety video for a company called ‘Future Services’.  Future services is a Logistics and Contracting company, who undertake contracts nationwide which handle a wide range of tasks such as, tents, catering, pre-fabricated housing/offices and sewage works.

I was placed in the company’s Health and Safety department in order to create a Health and Safety video for the company to be aware of, and follow, and when it came down to the editing of the video I also helped in the editing which is something I enjoy doing.

In the beginning I was introduced to the important colleagues of the company and was shown around the areas of where their construction takes place.  This was good to see as the reason why I was there was to create a Health and Safety video and where the contractors take place to build there are many dangerous objects laid around.  Every company has Health and Safety rules and ‘Future Services’ is no different.

After the introduction to the colleagues and company, I began to think about what I could film, also I thought about the angles, lighting, and sound.  I was quite excited to work in a professional company alongside with other professional individuals.

I went in to the placement at Future Services with strong skills of computer and camera knowledge, Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro editing software’s and I personally feel that I came out with stronger skills and confidence with working in a team with professionals.

Creating and editing a Health and Safety video for a professional company and the feelings I had during my time in Kuwait was great as I got to experience a new country, new people, and a company which I would normally not apply to.

Since I am a student away from home which I could call my comfort zone, the manager of ‘Future Services’ always made sure I was comfortable, if I needed any help, and was just taken care of which was extremely kind.

Since I have been told to not show the video to outsiders as it is only for the company use as it showed private viewings that the American Army use, where they sit and eat etc I will explain as much as I possibly can to what the video consists of.

The filming took approximately 6 days there were many days of delays as the country was experiencing terrible sandstorms and since we were working in the desert it was quite dangerous so we had to take time off from work.  The video consists of me filming inside and outside the tents in the desert, which showed contractors doing their job, creating tents for the American Army, following the contractors around on the construction site and filming the equipment which they use such as Caterpillars, bulldozers and many more complicated and oversized equipments.

The editing for the video took another 6 days to complete.  The video was quite simple as it was just a normal Health and Safety video but I did make sure to show them what a Coventry Media Production second year student is capable of doing and I added in some special effects.

Overall, I worked a total of 15days and the first 3 days was an introducing me to the colleagues at the company, the colleagues who work in the desert, and I got to work closely with the Logistics and Contracting Manager who goes by the name of Mr Marwan Zaidan at ‘Future Services’ and enjoyed my time there and met some interesting people.  It is exciting to work in a team of professionals outside of University walls as you know that everyone is treated fairly and there is no nonsense of favouritism of friends like University has.  I have learnt a lot from this work experience and I enjoyed doing the extra work in the office and following Mr Marwan Zaidan.

The rest of the five days from my work experience were spent in Coventry when working with Johnny Rickards project which is called CVTV as the set designer.  I have gone to meetings and I have also gone to look for material which Johnny said he wanted a purple velvet material which is where the interviewee will walk out from.  It just gives it a more professional look, the set designers have also been told that some time in these few weeks we will be called to get the set painted and it is a huge set so we might even ask some more individuals to help to get it done to meet the deadline.

I do find that there is a big difference between working in a professional environment and an environment which is being led by a group of students.  I do feel that we are doing extremely well however recently it has been quite disappointing as the communication has not been so good and cancellations of interviews on the day are quite disappointing.

There were many different roles for this project which I could have chosen but I wanted to choose being a set designer because it is something which I have not really done and I wanted to try something new.

Even though I have my 20 days now of work experience I am enjoying the CVTV project and I would like and will continue to be part of it as it is something new and quite exciting for the final project.

Brochure – my food ideas

As the food topic in the brochure is going to be my 3 pages I created a 3 page word document as that would help me sketch out my ideas.  So I decided to make each page different from the other.  On the first page I will have a a small, short, to the point introduction, something which could pull in anyone reading the brochure.  The second page will have a list of restaurants you can go to during the day and/or even with the family.  The third page will consist of a list of restaurants which are romantic, for couples, special occasions.

Personal reflection (Beginning)

When we were sent a message informing us about our new module which would start in May, we had no idea what it was going to be about.  React. Rethink. Respond. That is all we knew, and of course a mysterious coach taking us to our mysterious location.  No-one knew anything, which I guess made it exciting in a way if you think about it but at the same time we felt un-prepared.

May 23rd arrived, and as we sat down in class we still were not informed of where the coach would take us that week however, we were told to find 5 individuals and form a group.  The catch was to find individuals from the other courses as this would prevent us from forming a group with our friends, our comfort zone, and go make new friends, which we did.

The day of the trip came and as we put our equipment away and sat on the coach we were handed our assignment brief and on there said…….’BRIGHTON’.  Personally I was quite happy as Brighton is a place I go to every summer with family and friends.  It was a long drive to Brighton and an even longer drive back to Coventry.

Once, we got off the coach in Brighton it began to rain heavily we ran to a coffee shop to discuss what we were going to do and where we would go and by the time our group meeting was over, so was the rain for the rest of the day, and the sun was shining which boosted our energy, images and videos and made Brighton look like the place to be.

Here are a few images of Brighton which I took.

And you can see many more pictures on the video which we have created.

Brochure   +    RESEARCH VIDEO

During our group meeting yesterday we decided to have Brian, Poonam and myself each create 3 pages for the brochure of 3 different topics, Beatrice and Jaz will be in a video which will consist of our research and receive help with the editing.  Brian has decided to create his 3 pages about the ‘Political side and History’, Poonam is doing her 3 pages on the ‘Attractions’, and I will be doing my 3 pages based on the ‘Food’ in Brighton.

So hopefully our following group meetings go to plan and we can create a beautiful brochure.

Fingers crossed

Work Placement

After all the trouble and stress which I stumbled across in trying to find a work placement throughout Easter I finally did.  Since it was such last notice I found this placement abroad located in Kuwait in a company called ‘Future Services’.  I recently flew over and had an introduction of what I will be doing more in depth.  The role I have taken is emmensely important as it is something every individual willneed to master in any job they find.  I will be following the “Boss” as they call him here as he tells the individuals who work for him what to do.  If you think about it it is exactly like in BBC for example when you have the Director who informs everyone that works with him/her on what to do and help in creating everything.  Mr Marwan Zaidan has acknowledged the fact that I am a Media Production student wanting to learn how to keep confident, calm and focused even when certain arrangements are not working out as planned.  Mr Marwan has informed me that he will be allowing me to take charge to see my leadership skills so on and so forth.

I will also be creating and editing a Health and Safety video which is going to be exciting as I have been informed that I will be working in the desert which is giving me mixed feelings, but nevertheless I will no doubt persevere.  I am also a set designer in a project outside of University which is called CVTV and it is basically about interviewing real celebrities which is quite exciting and can be rewarding.
